P29 Thriving

In August of 2007 we saw the scuttling of a new wreck, the P29, in the popular diving area of Cirkewwa, just 5 minutes drive from our Riviera Dive Centre. P29 was an East German minesweeper before being commissioned by the Maltese Navy in 1996 as a patrol boat. In the past year and a half there has been significant growth on the shipwreck attracting many different types of fish including an elusive triggerfish.  The occasional barracuda makes its rounds as well as shoals of damsel fish and seabreams.    Since the P29 was sunk specifically for diving,  it has previously been cleaned and stripped of a lot of debris as well as removal of most doors and hatches making it perfect for penetration and for the PADI Wreck Specialty Course.  There are easy swim-throughs and it's safe to penetrate into the hold and engine-room because there is no silt to kick up, no dark corners, and entries/exits are obvious.  Many fixtures and fittings remain, so you can spend time spotting toilet bowls, the ship's tannoy or the German labels still on the controls.  This wreck has now become one of the most popular wreck dives in Malta.
